2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Response

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated staff about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.

The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a revised vision, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Recruitment

The news mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire text from the president's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our audience.

The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having spent the recent years developing and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in receiving him next week. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.

The President

Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Then, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description explains. "Challenge the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that change every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or platforms, but fans can expect more updates as development advances.
