European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
