A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
